Licences and credits
Finch is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later). Its source code is at github.com/quietfield-dev/finch.
Built on
- mpv plays the video (GNU GPL version 2 or later, as Finch builds it).
- FFmpeg decodes it (GNU LGPL version 2.1 or later).
- libplacebo renders the picture (GNU LGPL version 2.1 or later), and libass draws styled subtitles (ISC licence).
- uchardet guesses the encoding of a subtitle file saved in an older one, such as Cyrillic or Japanese (Mozilla Public License 1.1, or GNU GPL 2 or LGPL 2.1 or later).
- Slint draws the interface (used under the GNU GPL version 3).
- Noto Sans is the typeface, embedded in the program (SIL Open Font License 1.1).
- Hundreds of other Rust libraries (crates), each under its own licence, mostly MIT or Apache 2.0.
Posters and descriptions
Posters, backdrops, descriptions, episode names and each episode’s cast and crew come from The Movie Database (TMDB), only after you turn them on.

Full licence texts
In the Steam build and the tarball from GitHub, the licenses folder next to the finch program holds each library’s licence files and where its source came from, with vendor-mpv.sh, the script that built them, and vendor-checksums.txt. Its rust-crates.txt lists every Rust crate with its version and licence, Noto Sans’ licence is in its noto-sans folder, and Finch’s own licence is the LICENSE file beside the program. In the Flatpak, /app/share/licenses/dev.quietfield.Finch holds Finch’s LICENSE, the noto-sans folder with the font’s licence, rust-crates.txt with the crates’ licence files, and the licence files of mpv and the libraries built with it; its FFmpeg comes with the Flatpak runtime, under the runtime’s own licences.
